Single-ended heating elements are a common type of tubular heating element, named for their single-end wiring. They are also called single-ended heating tubes or cartridge heaters. The commonly used model in the industry is M3, and the term "cartridge heater" is similar in other countries. With its compact structure and high-efficiency heating characteristics, it has become a core heating component in industrial and consumer applications. The core structure and heating principle are simple. Its typical structure consists of six parts: a nickel-chromium alloy heating wire (the core heating element), a metal sheath (stainless steel/copper/aluminum), magnesium oxide powder (insulating and thermally conductive filler), a lead rod, sealing material, and wiring terminals. During operation, it follows the laws of electrothermal activity: current passes through the resistance wire to generate heat, which is then transferred through the highly thermally conductive magnesium oxide powder to the metal sheath and finally evenly distributed to the object being heated. The energy conversion efficiency can reach over 90%.
Its core advantages are significant: First, it is compact, with a diameter of only 3-25mm and a length that can be customized between 20-2000mm, making it suitable for installations in confined spaces; second, it boasts high power density, 2-5 times that of ordinary electric heating tubes, with a surface load reaching up to 60W/cm², resulting in rapid heating and energy savings; third, it is easy to install and maintain, quickly secured via threads or fixing plates, offering flexible assembly and disassembly, and can be bent into various shapes.
Its applications cover multiple fields, most commonly mold heating (injection molding, stamping, rubber molds, etc.), ensuring continuous melting and shaping of materials; it is also widely used in plastic machinery heating systems, pharmaceutical production lines, laboratory heat treatment, and equipment such as hot-cutting knives and uniform heating platforms in packaging machinery.
There are three key points to consider when selecting and using single-ended electric heating elements for beginners: First, confirm the voltage, power, tube diameter, length, and sheath material (e.g., 304 stainless steel is suitable for environments up to 550℃). Second, ensure the gap between the heating element and the mounting hole is <=0.05mm during installation to prevent poor heat conduction. Third, avoid dry burning during use, avoid excessive bending of the lead wire, and preheat for 5 minutes in humid environments to prevent electric leakage.
